THE ART
The fine art of Mary Vaughan can be nostalgic, romantic or sensual; other times, quirky or playfully poetic. No matter what the impulse, this artist’s physical marks amid color pools emote a wide range of feeling, if not, meaning. Her work is a painterly process through metaphor, using organic objects and earth entities to suggest a connection to human experience. She is vastly interested in the edible and nature concepts as they relate to our own bodies and state of being.

Eco-Abstracts
A sense of movement permeates these works as if a flow of current, wind or water might be rushing through them. One or two word titles hint at visual metaphor suggested through illuminated natural forms or unexpected combinations of biotic details.

Piquants
Here Vaughan shows a delectable play on fruit and vegetables, but don’t count the artist in as a food painter. With a master’s thesis on food imagery & feminine desire, Vaughan’s piquant images are humorous, amorous, love paintings at least. They exude a gamut of feeling associated with human relationships. Let a split fig evoke an aching heart turned open, or a tumbling citrus, entice you to dance or to despair. These pieces are painterly, fresh to look at, yet curious to define.

Rose Zones
Vaughan cannot let go of her attachment to this nostalgic bloom. More interested in them as dried keepsakes or gone-to-seed wreckages, this artist never paints a perfect blossom, but a bramble or gnarled undergrowth. Raw burgeons appear alongside what she calls, “handled panels” – collected old surfaces. She is intrigued how weathered patina can echo modern aesthetic.

Naturettes
These small works based on simple organic objects can be mellow in tone or full of color kick. They are glimpses into cell structures or unexpected mini microcosms. Watch for unexpected details that hint at orbs. Vaughan seems to have a fetish for marbles, pods, knobs and odd little antique parts that suggest circles.

Gameboards & Wall Boxes
The vintage fonts, colors, and images of retro game boards and old signage become of main interest in these funky and often functional pieces. All sections used are authentic, of an older era. Vaughan exudes, “collecting is part of the art - the physical day I go searching, the story of the find, and the item that echoes a worn quality, is process too.”

Land Forms
Vaughan finds a “comfort zone” in these landscapes that keep formal painting in check. She states, “There is a meditative quality in painting land and an sensory experience in going outdoors to work – sight, sound, smell are heightened in the face of nature as a subject to capture - which ultimately effects the other, more intuitive work.”

Mural Gigs
One of the ways Vaughan helps to bring art to all ages is through her innovative, collaborative work on piece-by-piece section murals. Her large-scale school murals take on “earth awareness” as a theme, immersing students in environmental issues as an art form. This section of work shows the way her work with schools have transformed blank walls into lively art spaces, children into artistic thinkers and teachers/parents into art advocates.
